The Great Peach Rush: learning from ants

We were on the verandah, chatting as we munched our way through a plate of juicy fresh peach slices, and heavenly passionfruit chocolate, flicking the occasional ant away.  Absently I moved the last peach slice away from ants onto the chocolate plate.  (We  were both being polite, not taking the last piece of either).

Watching the ants I noticed some found a drop of peach juice and stayed, head down, lapping it up.  Others tasted then wandered to the next, tasted and wandered on, perhaps looking for bigger and better?  Some seemed to be just wandering aimlessly, not finding any juicy treasure, even though they passed close by to others that had.

All of those ants on one plate, struggling with a few drops, yet next door, the other plate held a whole slice plus chocolate.  It was just there, waiting for some ant to notice.

Finally one ant appeared on the plate of treasures, quickly followed by another – “Ah, early adopters,” winked my friend, Lisa.

Funny how human those ants seemed!  Which ant would you have been?
